Starting with 1989’s Grip It! On That Other Level, you know what the Geto Boys represent, and where they’re coming from, and where they want to go, and whom Willie D, for starters, is willing to steamroll to get there. They were proud to rep Houston and, of course, inspired thousands of other Houston rappers to be proud of being from Houston, but even better they helped establish the idea of being proud of wherever you were from, even if it wasn’t New York or L.A. The other big revelation was for the group to stop trying to sound like they were all from New York City, or sound like New York City, or sound like they wish they were in New York City. Here is an excerpt from a song called “No Curfew,” about their desire to not have a curfew. The album’s sound, as provided by DJ Ready Red with Sire Jukebox and Prince Johnny C rapping over top, is extremely Run-DMC. The group’s first song, from 1986, was called “Car Freak,” and their first album, from 1988, was called Making Trouble, and at this point Willie D and Scarface aren’t involved at all, and Bushwick Bill is only involved as a hype man and dancer. James Prince, the founder and CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records, put the first Geto Boys lineup together in the mid-’80s, and that lineup would mutate constantly. Below is an excerpt from Episode 6, which looks at the backstory and legacy of the Geto Boys’ 1991 classic, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.”

Autumn! signed to his label Victor Victor in 2021 and has only gotten bigger since.Grunge. His project Antagonist! dropped late last month and displayed the varied sounds that eventually got him onto the radar of record executive Steven Victor. Not bad at all for a producer who had no desire to rap at first. He can also get into an R&B bag, which is additionally heard on the slow-paced ode to a long distance lover. With over 15 million Spotify streams on the record, it's clear that Autumn's versatility and vulnerable lyrics got him over the top. In 2020, his career began to turn thanks to the success of his song "One Way." On the track, he shines with the uber-popular PluggNB sound where staccato flows and upbeat keys reign supreme. Under Autumn!, the rising rapper went on to drop over ten projects between 2018 to 2022. Urged to get behind the mic by fellow buzzing artist Summrs (and other members of his crew Slayworld), he chose the moniker Autumn!, totally unrelated to his season-named friend. And then became Autumn! in 2018 when he started rapping. native was first known as Twinuzis, the producer. At just 11 years old, Autumn! learned his way around the recording program MixCraft and continued making beats after his brother moved away. His route to that was producing while big bro worked on his rap skills. Long before the world knew him as Autumn!-the genre-bending rapper and producer-he was just a kid trying to find ways to bond with his older brother. Music can take people to all sorts of places, especially if one keeps their mind open.
